Freeport in the Bahamas

Freeport is the second largest city in the Bahamas and is located on Grand Bahama.

What Are Some Things To Do In Freeport?

Some parks worth checking out are the Rand Nature Centra (actually a slightly offshore island park), and the Lucayan National Park is here as well. There are also some ocean blue holes on this island. They might not be as impressive as some of what you find on Eleuthera, but they are definitely worth seeing! There is some great local food on the island of Grand Bahama. Getting outside of Freeport can offer the opportunity for some great local fried conch as well as many other local dishes. Don’t forget to wash it down with a local Bahamian beer. They have those!

Where Can I Stay In Freeport?

There are many hotels on the island. Most are located along the southern shore and face the Northwest Providence Channel. There are also homes to rent and smaller hotels, but the southern shore will provide the most options.

Fun Fact:

Grand Bahama Port Authority is a private company that runs Freeport under special contract with the Bahamas’ government at least until the contract is up for renewal in August 2054. It has been under private contract since 1955.

How Do I Get To Freeport on Grand Bahama?

While it’s not as popular a spot as Nassau for cruises, the cruise ships do make it in there one or two times a week. There are also some commercial flights flying in and out of Freeport on Grand Bahama. They are great about being late and cramming you into a horribly uncomfortable seat. They often cancel these flights at the last minute at no extra charge. Of course, there is also AirGate Aviation (Did we mention this before?)! This is a great island and one worth checking out however you choose to get there, but we are always happy to help you charter an aircraft to Freeport!
